B2B Lead Generation for SaaS Startups: An Outbound Framework
Early-stage SaaS companies can’t wait for inbound to kick in. A focused outbound motion can bring in the first 10, 50 or 100 customers while content and SEO slowly build. Here is a practical framework for SaaS founders and first sales hires.
1. Narrow your ICP aggressively
Broad targeting kills SaaS outbound. Pick one segment where your product solves an urgent, specific problem: for example, “marketing agencies with 10 to 50 staff in the UK using HubSpot”. Use your first happy customers to define it, and see our guide to building an ICP.
2. Find the buyer and the user
SaaS deals usually involve two people: the person who feels the pain daily (the user) and the person who approves budget (the buyer). In small companies these may be the same person, often the founder. Target both titles in each account.
3. Use signals to time your outreach
- Hiring: a company hiring for the role your tool supports.
- Funding: recently raised companies are investing in tools.
- Tech stack: using a competitor or a tool you integrate with.
- Growth: headcount growth in a specific department.
4. Build a clean, targeted list
Start with 500 to 1,000 contacts in one segment. Each record should include name, title, company, website, LinkedIn URL and a validated work email. Clean data keeps bounces low and protects the domain you’ll rely on for months. If you use Apollo filters, an Apollo export is a quick way to get started.
5. Write problem-first messages
Lead with the problem, not the product:
- One personalised line (a signal you noticed).
- One sentence on the problem it usually causes.
- One sentence on the outcome you deliver, with proof if you have it.
- A low-friction question: “Worth a look?” beats “Can we book 30 minutes?”
6. Run a simple multi-touch sequence
- Day 1: email one.
- Day 3: LinkedIn connection request with a short note.
- Day 5: follow-up email with a useful resource or insight.
- Day 9: LinkedIn message if connected.
- Day 14: short breakup email.
Before you scale, make sure your setup passes our deliverability checklist.
7. Measure what matters
- Reply rate by segment and message version.
- Meetings booked and demo-to-trial conversion.
- Cost per meeting, which tells you whether the channel pays off (see how B2B lead pricing works).
8. Double down on what works
When one segment responds, expand to similar ones: neighbouring industries, adjacent company sizes or new countries. Keep the messaging tight and the data fresh.
